The Journey Starts Here – Glozhene Village
LOCATION
Glozhene is a village in Teteven municipality, Lovech district. It is 56 km southwest of the regional town of Lovech, 12 km northwest of the city of Teteven, 12 km southeast of the town of Yablanitsa and about 105 km east of the capital Sofia. The population is about 1000 people. Glozhene is located about 10 km from the main road Sofia-Varna. The closest connection for Plovdiv and southern Bulgaria is the Troyan — Karnare pass, about 70 km. from the town of Teteven. The village is located on the banks of the river. Vit at the foot of Stara Planina, 320 m above sea level. The climate is characterized by relatively mild winters and cool summers. An ecologically clean area with a favourable climate and numerous natural attractions.
HISTORY
The village of Glozhene has a rich history dating back to Antiquity: The forest massifs, the full-flowing river Vit, lush vegetation, comfortable caves, the presence of many fish in the land of Glozhene have created attractive living conditions for people since ancient times. So far, it is not possible to say with accuracy when the first inhabitants appeared there. However, historical science has established that people lived in the land of the village of Glozhene during the period of the Late Paleolithic (Old Stone Age).
The story continues into the Middle Ages, and is associated with the names of Tsar Ivan Asen II and the Kiev prince Glozh. They are the founders of Mach. Asen and the village of Glozhene. As proof, the Glozhen Monastery, which Prince Gloj built in the 13th century, has been preserved.
During the Renaissance, Glozhene was associated with the name of Vasil Levski and his most loyal associate Vasil Jonkov — Glozhenets, who was also the first mayor after the Liberation. Glozhentsi were extremely active in the national liberation movement.
In the village of Glozhene there are houses and buildings with extremely valuable and old architecture from the Renaissance and after the Liberation. These are both private homes and public buildings.
TOURISM
The temple holiday is on the day of the saint – May 6. The monastery can be reached by car — through the village. A small spring or on foot, along a marked eco-path “Village of Glozhene – Glozhenski Monastery – Morovitsa Cave”, which is part of the tourist route “In the footsteps of Levski”.
In 1870, in the teacher’s room of the local school, Vasil Levski founded a revolutionary committee in the village. A large spring with the name “Suleimanoglu Daoud”, which Levski declared as the First District Revolutionary Committee in Bulgaria.
